Throughout my years of high school, I have learned that you cannot fundraise well for any kind of cause without enjoying it. Putting the “FUN” in fundraising makes a little or big success from the job seem much better. Of course, having fun while fundraising very much depends on the method of fundraising you or your group chooses and believed will be the most successful.

Fundraising comes in several depending on both a person’s perspective and how money is attained. Here’s a list of a few fundraiser types that any organization can use as well as the benefits and drawbacks of using each type of fundraiser:

•	Fundraising through selling products: This is an extremely common type of fundraiser. Usually this type of fundraising is done individually and through either carrying products with you to sell or to take orders by paper to be delivered at a later time. At my school, students usually purchase candy bars, popcorn, donuts, jewelry, or make baked goods to sell to other students as a fundraiser. On occasion, you may also see this type of fundraiser along sidewalks with people selling bouquets or fruit.

BENEFIT: A lot of profit can be made off of this kind of typical and easy fundraiser if done often and with dedication. You learn how to be a better salesman and who is most likely to be a repeat customer.

DRAWBACK: The product and the person demanding a certain product varies day-by-day. You could sell a lot of one kind of product for one day and sell out quickly, or you could sell little of another kind of product and not make any profit at all. Also, you are not only one trying to fundraise for something, so competition and competitive prices are problems to face.

•	Fundraising through restaurants, cafes and other businesses: What some clubs tend to do to fundraise for any cause is through setting up a fundraiser with a small business like a restaurant, a bowling alley, an ice-skating rink, etc. To get a small business to help you with fundraising for a cause is to tell them directly what cause you are working for, where the money will go and how it will help out the cause and those in need. From what my school clubs have done, they usually call, email or meet up with the business manager and work out the date, time and financial issues concerning the event. Once all details are finalized, this is when club members begin to advertise. Flyers are put up, announcements are made, and if public advertising is a hit, so is the fundraiser.

BENEFIT: This requires less work than individually vending some product for cash. Also, it is much easier to attend this kind of event with friends and family.

DRAWBACK: Without decent advertising, this can be very unsuccessful when hardly anyone shows up. One result could be that the business makes little money, therefore you make little money. It’s also important to make sure you can trust the business manager. From my experience with fundraising, one business my club worked with ended up reaping little profit from a fundraiser that was actually a hit mainly due to miscommunication and possibly some trickery.

•	Fundraising through recycling: This form of fundraising is particularly new today in how we can recycle a myriad of old products and receive some money out of it. What most schools already do is set up designated trash cans as recycling bins for paper, cans or bottles. Some clubs have set up recycling fundraisers for ink cartridges, old cell-phones, CDs, DVDs, glass, old antiques, toys, clothing and much more. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” right?

BENEFIT: You help the environment and make money for yourself. You also get rid of the clutter around your house, neighborhood and school.

DRAWBACK: There might be difficulty finding organizations that are willing to recycle these products if you don’t know where to look. Some organizations require you to have an abundant or specific amount of recyclable items in order to actually pay you for what you want to recycle.

•	Fundraising through donations: This can be the easiest or the most difficult kind of fundraiser. My club ran a fundraiser for trick-or-treat for UNICEF where we collected coins individually for charity. This is a very simple donation fundraiser. There are other organizations that set up websites where they ask a person to donate a certain amount of money that will be used for the cause in a certain way.

BENEFIT: With a simple coin donation fundraiser, almost anyone from any class can donate. It’s easy, seems harmless and the amount of change grows in financial and physical weight.

DRAWBACK: With certain donations that require electronic cash or a set amount for donating can lead to problems in how most people who want to fundraise for a cause may not have the resources or set amount of money to donate due to classism. In addition, having a set amount can be distasteful as opposed to just asking for any random donation.

These general fundraising ideas are the most commonly used amongst organizations and clubs. Trying to make a decision on which fundraising method to use always depends on how you measure success and the most beneficial for your group or for yourself. Just remember to have fun with making a difference, big or small.

The Huong Viet Music Group is a youth group that organized charity concerts to raise money to build schools, washrooms, and buy school supplies for children in Vietnam. In 1998, the group started out as a small group of family friends who organized a small classical/traditional music recital to raise money for Khuong To’s surgery.

Four-year-old Khuong had a rare cancer in his eye, which if left untreated would have led to either blindness or death. The only treatment that was available in Vietnam at the time was removal of both of his eyes. However, doctors at The Hospital for Sick Children in Canada were able to perform a surgery which saved his eyesight and rid him of the tumour thanks to the funds raised by the Vietnamese Association of Toronto – with the help of several Vietnamese organizations in the community.

The sign for one of Huong Viet's concerts

In December 2000, the group organized their first charity concert. It was a thirty-something-act performance, lasted three and a half hours, and was held at the Stone Church in Toronto. The significance of this performance was that it was organized mainly by teenagers and children. The leader of the group had been a teenager at the time, and although she had the help of her parents, she took care of the majority of the organizational details, including obtaining sponsors, booking the hall, coordinating practices, etc. In the beginning, the group didn’t have professional spaces to practice in. The practices were held at different group members’ houses – children were dancing in basements, sitting cross-legged in circles, singing on the floor, accompanied by a lone guitar, and practicing skits in the kitchen.

The performances were mostly cultural, including traditional dances, songs, and skits, and were put on by the children. It was quite the learning experience for them, as they were able to keep in touch with their roots and learn about their culture and language. Some were unable to read and understand the lyrics to the songs, but were taught how by those teaching the songs. It was important for the children to be in an environment with people who were experiencing similar situations as them – growing up in a strong community with no real knowledge or understanding of the significance of the Vietnamese traditions or culture. The group continued to be active and organized concerts for a decade. One of the members of the group travelled to Vietnam with the money, donated it, and returned back with letters and pictures.

The opening song of every concert was one that was called “Bên Em Đang Có Ta”, which translates to “beside you is us”. At the time, the song represented the barrier between the tired children, break time, and food, as there was always the dreaded, “Okay, let’s practice this song one more time! It’s almost perfect! Let’s try the chorus again, shall we? From the top!” However, looking back, and remembering how the audience sang along to this song at every concert, this song represented hope – that if enough people cared, then something could be done.

It’s been years since I have been actively involved with this group and I forget what speech my co-emcee and I made at the beginning of every concert, explaining to the audience the theme and significance of the concert. However, I do remember the excitement of watching our parents tally up the money from the donations box, sponsors, and ticket sales, and reading through an endless financial report booklet at the end of every concert. I understand that we made have not made the biggest difference, but it’s just knowing that we tried our best. What’s really stuck the most, I guess, after all these years, is the picture of the children laughing and holding their school supplies.

One of our performances: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiXzbA0JMXE&feature=related

What a great night it was to welcome home the Far*East Movement from their National Party Rock Tour and raise money for the UC Davis MIND Institute and the Little Red Scarf Project. Our little gathering raised $1000 dollars for the research on Autism and collected 4 boxes full of presents for the Children of the Little Red Scarf Project in China. Thank you everyone for your donations!

There were great performances by AJ Rafael, IZ, Lydia Paek, Vudoo Soul, Kevin Ko, Mare Rasing and a surprise performance by FM! The atmosphere was so intimate and relaxed. The artists were able to interact with the audience which was what we wanted to create for this event.

We are especially proud of Kevin Ko who attends Wilson High School and attended our 4C the Power workshop in November. He absolutely blew us away with his rapping skills at the workshop. IZ and 4C gave Kevin a challenge to practice and write a rap, and then perform it. Well that’s what happened at the Acoustic Holiday Party! Kevin performed FM’s Blue Collar Blues with Mare singing the hook.

FM was so surprised and happy with Kevin selecting their song and then performing it so well. Kevin rapped jsplif’s verse and then wrote his own verse. HE WAS AWESOME!!
