Too Electronically Dependent 3
But it’s time to get down to the facts and see the statistics of all children in the U.S. Actually, scratch that, the truth is, although kids are getting the worst, everyone in America is slowly starting to depend more and more on technology. Almost everyone has cars, GPS’s, Smartphone’s, laptops…and other. We can’t even read a map anymore without looking up the directions, and the thought of writing a letter to someone when you can call, text, IM, or email is crazy to many people. So…the real true hard data:
- The average American watches about 28 hours of television a week, roughly 4 hours a day.
- So if you are over 70 years old, you would’ve watched over 9 years watching TV!
But then there are the specifics. First is how TV and electronics are affecting children.
- The average child spends 900 hours at school; multiply that number by two and subtract 300 and that is how much they spend on the TV. 1500 hours.
- 3.5 minutes are spent a week of the child’s life from having a meaningful conversation with his/her parent.
- 54 % of 5 year olds prefer television to their father.
These are just a few facts from a child, but overall the family life is just as shocking:
- 99% of families own at least one television
- But the average number of owned televisions per house is 2.24
- 66% own 3+ TVS
- 66% of families watch dinner and eat TV regularly
So what are we resorting to? We choose electronics over our family, watch more TV than study, and spend years on the tube. It’s becoming a bigger and bigger issue, not only in the United States but also nationally as well. We have begun to become so lazy that we will invent almost anything that can assist us. Although it does show that we are very productive and intelligent enough to come up with devices it could lead to terrible consequences in the future if we continue to create things to assist us that should be part of the everyday life. If our generations continue the path that we are on right now we will come to a point that we won’t even think for ourselves.
